The invention relates to improving the quality of a liquid obtained from solvent refined coal. /P P The liquid from a solvent refined carbon is dissolved in a recycle solvent and the solution is hydrogenated over a fixed bed catalyst. The product formed has a greatly increased content of hydrogen and its content of hetero atoms is markedly reduced. /P P This improves the compatibility of the liquid with petroleum-based fuels, in order to meet specifications concerning pollution (use as fuel) or to allow it to be mixed with fuels or fuels such as fuels for gas turbines.
