The relay has a largest dimension of only a few centimetres so that it can be mounted on printed circuit boards. Its current carrying capacity is very high. It is suitable for on and off switching or for changeover switching. In addition to an electro-magnet there is also a permanent magnet (21), which is arranged such that the relay contacts (15, 16) are located between its poles (26, 27). The magnetic field near the contacts is approximately at right angles to the straight line joining the two contacts. The permanent magnet is U-shaped with the limbs of the U forming the poles. It is attached to the base plate of the relay.
