Body scanner with radiation detector array - has several detectors grouped in evacuated housings but with constant detector spacing

A body scanner using a fan-shaped beam of X-rays or gamma rays has a detector array comprising groups of germanium detectors (22-26; 30-34; 38-42) in evacuated housings (16, 17, 18). The spacing (a, b) between the end detectors in adjacent housings is arranged to be the same as the spacing between the detectors in each group. Each group has a common base (20, 28, 36) with slots (21, 29, 37) separating the individual detectors, and a ceramic substrate. The housing have radiation windows of aluminium and are contained in a cryostrat. A collimator is associated with the cryostrat.
