Formation of surface patterns in die inserts - using spark erosion with copper electrode, esp. used for mfg. dies used in injection moulding or pressure die casting

A steel tool is provided mechanically with a negative impression of the required pattern, and is hardened so it can be used as a punch for stamping the pattern into a copper plate. The copper plate is then used as an electrode for making the desired pattern in die insert plates via spark erosion. The copper plate is pref. supported by a steel substrate forming part of the electrode. The punching tool can be made by machining in which swarf is produced, or where no swarf is produced, e.g. by stamping. Used e.g. for the mfr. of components assembled to make switchboard panels, where die inserts, e.g. for injection moulding, can be made in relatively large numbers with the same profile.
