The measurement of blood flow rates in artificial assist pumps for body implantation is achieved by measurement of the pneumatic pressure and flow rates to the diaphragm drive stage. This avoids problems associated with direct instrumentation of the blood flow. The blood flow rate is given by an algebraic rate, the air or gas pressure change, the pump frequency, an initial frequency and three constants determined by the computation circuit. These three latter values may be adjusted by potentiometers.
