Automatic measurement of characteristics of rolled plate - uses surface measurement and computer to calculate three descriptive parameters

Automatic measurement of characteristics of transverse profile of hot-rolled plate is to determine suitability of plate for subsequent cold-rolling stage, and to permit necessary corrective measures to be taken at the hot rolling stage. The method consists of measuring the transverse profile of the plate and from these measurements calculating three parameters which describe and quantify the suitability of the plate. The measurements are taken using a suitable profile measuring device and a computer is used to calculate the parameters. Necessary devices to move the measuring head and to indicate its position, and to synchronise the stage of the procedure are included in the machine.
