The worm of the worm gear unit is formed by winding a thread member in a helical form on a curned shaft which is mounted at its ends in bearings. The sides of the thread are formed with teeth which mesh when the thread is would to avoid a shearing action between adjacent turns of the helix. The teeth on the thread member are preferably of rack form, the thread member preferably having a T-cross section whose stem forms the thread engaged by the worm wheel of the unit.
