The elliptical chain sprocket is for use on bicycles, and the pitch line of the teeth is situated on two identical half-ellipses fitted together along the major axis onto an intermediate rectangular portion, with teeth in its short sides. The assembly thus forms a complete sprocket. The sprocket may be annular and have three inwardly facing lugs spaced by 120 deg. These lugs are slotted and slidably receive pins on the ends of arms projecting from a hub.
