Tinctorial compsn. for Keratinous fibres utilisable for direct dyeing, oxidn. dyeing or both direct and oxidn. dyeing contains in an aq. carrier, either at least one (nitro coupler) cpd. of formula (I): (where R is H, alkyl or halogen; R' is H, alkyl, hydroxy-alkyl, carbamyl-alkyl, mesylaminoalkyl, aminoalkyl, acylaminoalkyl, monoalkylaminoalkyl, dialkyl-aminoalkyl, piperidinoalkyl, morpholinoalkyl, carbamoyl, acyl or carboalkoxy) or at least one (I) and at least one oxidn. base of formula (II) (where R1-R4 are independently H, alkyl, halogen or alkoxy; Y is OH or -NR5R6; R5 and R6 are independently H, alkyl, hydioxyalkyl, carbamyalkyl, mesylaminoalkyl, aminoalkyl, acylaminoalkyl, sulphoalkyl, morpholinoalkyl, piperidinoalkyl, the alkyl gps. contg. 1-4C atoms) or a heterocyclic cpd. contg. in the p-pos. either two amino gps., or an amino gp. and an OH gp. This base may be in the free base or acid addition salt form. Cpds. (I) where R and R' are not simultaneously H are novel. The cpds. obtd. by condensn. of (I) and the oxidn. bases esp. those of formula (II) are also novel. A wide range of hair colours possible. The dyeings are deep, highly stable and fast to light, weather and washing. The nitro couplers themselves have sufficient stability in ammoniacal, alcoholic and aq. alcoholic medium. Nitro couplers comprise novel cpds. such as 2-methyl-5-acetylamino-6-nitrophenol, and also novel indo-nitroanilines and indo-nitrophenols such as N-(4'-hydroxy) phenyl -2-methyl-5-amino-6-nitro-benzoquinone-imine.
