Endo-antigenic extracts of Bordetella pertussis and parapertussis - for prepn. of anti-whooping cough vaccine

Endo-antigen extracts of Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis are prepd. by (a) culturing separately 2 strains of B. pertussis and one of B. parapertussis in different culture media, (b) extracting the bacteria, (c) lysing the extracted bacteria, (d) centrifuging the lysate and recovering the supernatant liquid, (e) combining the three liquids in equal parts and (f) de-toxifying the endo-antigens in the mixt. The culture is pref. effected in a medium contg. L-cystine and DL-tryptophan. Lysis is pref. effected with glycine, and detoxification is effected with sodium mercurothiolate. The products are used to prepare anti-whooping cough vaccines, to prepare the corresp. anti-serums, to stimulate lymphocytes, and for serological research. The vaccines have less side effects than conventional anti-whooping cough vaccines.
