The safety lifting hook is particularly for the hoist winch of a travelling overhead crane. It has a body with a lifting eye at one end, and a hinging tongue shutting off or freeing the mouth of the hook. The tongue (5) is fixed to a control arm (6), and hinges with it on a spindle (4) fixed to the hook body (1). The arm can be arranged to work in conjunction with a locking device on the hook body, so as to secure the tongue in the open position, typically a spring catch. The hinge axis can be offset towards the hook mouth from the vertical plane passing through the centre of the eye (2), so that the tongue drops under gravity into the locked position when the catch is released.
