The egg conveying system for a hen battery includes a sorting arrangement for discarding the eggs with soft shells from thos with normal shells. The eggs from all the cages fall onto a belt conveyor which then discharges into a cross conveyor. At the junction between them is a separating device. This consists of two parallel cables which rotate around a drive drum and a return drum. The distance between these cables is determined so that soft eggs will fall between them onto a reject container, and normal eggs will pass onwards to reach the cross conveyor.
