In the single or multiple pole switch the fixed electrodes are bridged by a conducting liquid such as mercury. The form of the switch is such that the mercury does not naturally fall to the lowest position in the operating volume and hence can be used in any orientation. The preferably magnetic material, electrodes (4-7) which are not wetted by the mercury (3) enter the switching volume through a, normally two part, insulating shell (1) and are flush with its inside surface. A central ball (2) or shaped element controlled by a solenoid forces the mercury into the required position.
