The talking toy, such as doll or soft toy, incorporates a recording appliance and cassette, so that recordings may be played back to the child. The appliance is protected by the fur, and the loudspeaker is contained in the body. The appliance is battery operated. Alternatively, the toy can be made of plastics in the shape of e.g. a telephone, with the recorder fixed into the base. Knobs are provided for controlling the recording, and a screen may be incorporated for pictures to be shown in connection with the story being told.
