The device, which is erected in the cracking region of the snow mass (avalanche, drifted-snow sheet, roof snowslip), has a tilting element (2) which is provided with a collecting surface (3), arranged unsymmetrically in relation to the tilting axis (17), for the falling snow, and with an adjustable counterweight (7), and is delimited in the tilting movement by a stop. By adjusting the distance of the counterweight (7) from the tilting axis (17), the snow height on the collecting surface (3) is defined, which if exceeded triggers the tilting operation. The snow mass sliding off crashes onto the snow lying on the inclined surface, which is freed from the base by the crash and slides off. The tilting operation is also influenced by a body (11) which during the tilting movement increases its distance from the tilting axis (17) and during the return movement decreases it. The change in distance of the body (11) brings about a displacement of the centre of gravity of the tilting element (2), with which the introduction of the tilting movement and the subsequent discharging of the collecting surface (3) is ensured.
