Sponge iron briquettes for mfg. cast iron - where briquettes contain silicon carbide which increases the yield of molten iron

The briquettes contain 70-90% metallic iron; 5-15% iron oxides and other oxides normally present; plus 5-20 wt.% fine SiC. The SiC may be present as a mixt. contg. from 1/20th to 4 times its wt. of SiC, but esp. 40-60% SiC. The briquettes are used esp. for the mfr. of cast iron or alloy cast irons in cupolas or in electric furnaces. When the sponge iron briquettes are melted, a much higher yield of molten iron is obtd., i.e. the amt. of iron lost to the slag is greatly reduced.
