The compensator has the signal coded directly in a first step and then displaced by half an increment using an adder or subtractor on the input side of the quantiser. Only then is the signal coded. These two steps are accomplished with the aid of a change-over switch and random noise source. A corrected random variable is generated from the random variables formed after the first and second steps by using an adder an subtractor on the output side of the quantiser. The corrected variable's probability is a linear function of the input signal. The corrected variable is obtained by averaging.
