The system measures the travelling condition or rail-mounted vehicles, particularly gantry cranes and regulates the travel drive correspondingly. Two or more contactless measuring probes continuously measure the distance to a datum line, the results being recorded and compared. Any discrepancy from a desired value is used to regulate the travel drive mechanisms. The probes (5, 6) can be spaced apart in a plane clear of one of the crane travel rails (2, 3) or of a guide strip on the crane, being connected to a control unit (7) regulating the driving motors. They can be in the form of ultrasonic emitter/receivers.
