Prodn. of manganese-52 isotope - by irradiating vanadium with helium-3 ions

Isotope 52Mn is obtd. by bombarding a V-contg. target, pref. a foil to V (alloy), with 3He ions and chemically recovering the 52Mn prod. The 3He ions pref. have an energy of about 14MeV. 52Mn is a useful nuclear medicine isotope, e.g. in blood investigation. Method avoids formation of unwanted 54Mn; other radionuclides obtd. are all short-lived.
