Steam gasification of coal or coke - with injection of gaseous ammonia or aq. metal oxide as catalyst

Gasification is effected in the presence of a catalyst comprising NH3 or an alkali(ne earth) metal oxide. The NH3 is introduced into the gasification reactor together with the feed steam; the metal oxides are introduced in the form of an aq. soln. of the oxide, or pref. of a cpd. which decomposes to the oxide on heating, which is sprayed into the reactor. The process increases the gasification rate and modifies the prod. gas compsn. without raising the gasification temp.; only small amts. of catalyst are required. The amt. of oxide catalyst used is pref. 0.05-2 (esp. 0.4-1.5) wt. % based on the C content of the coal or coke feed.
