Foamed mineral silicate mouldings - contg. fly ash or slag and asbestos and/or paper waste, and phosphate binder soln., and having high thermal and sound insulating properties
A mixt. is made contg. by wt. (I) 40-60% fly ash, slag or silicates; (II) 60-40% asbestos, asbestos waste and/or fine waste obtd. from the paper industry; (III) possibly a small amt. of Al powder; and (IV) a 30-50% aq. phosphate soln. The mixt. is then cast in moulds. Part of materials (II) may be replaced by 10-20% of scrap glass, clay, lime or brick flour. The amt. of Al powder (IV) if used, is pref. 0.3-0.5% and the mouldings are pref. hardened by heat or by high-frequency energy. Soln. (IV) pref. contains aluminium phosphate; magnesium phosphate; or monocalcium phosphate; and may also contain up to 20 wt.% of seawater. The moulded prods. have valuable mechanical and physical properties, esp. heat- and sound-insulation; and are made from inexpensive raw materials by a process using max. 116-232 kW/m3 energy, which is much less than the 675-815 kW/m3 required to mfr. mouldings made of gas silicate concrete or foamed concrete.
