The membrane compressor driven by an electric motor can be used to inflate vehicle tyres, sports balls etc. Inside a metal housing (27) is a metal membrane (15) clamped between an upper flange and a top plate (26). The compression chamber (28) is above the membrane, inside the plate. This plate forms a unit containing a multi-way valve and a set of inlet and outlet channles, controlled by a disc valve (22), forming an outlet valve. An inlet valve (16) is formed by a piston (13) rotating above the membrane, at its centre. The inlet is formed by a hole at the centre of the membrane. Two outlet channels extend across the top plate, one each side of the rotary changeover device (18) at the centre.
