The hardness of the boiled eggs is determined by a displacement of water by a water measuring vessel (1) which has a fillter opening (4) which tapers like a bottle neck and serves as the measuring limit. A fine adjustment mechanism is also provided through which the amt. of water in the measuring vessel (1) can be adapted to further influencing factors, such as the size of the egg. The bottle-neck like opening ensures any errors caused by faulty readings are kept to a min. The fine adjustment mechanism can have a screw drive (5, 6) associated with the slider (3) which moves relative to the vessel for the scale.
