The model is intended for demonstrating the principle of a Stirling engine. It comprises a displacement cylinder (10) and a separate working cylinder (43) with parallel axes, whose gas chambers are interconnected (27), whilst their reciprocating pistons (13, 44) are 90 deg. out of phase. The displacement cylinder and its adjustable piston are of material with low thermal conductivity. The lower end of the displacement cylinder is contained in a downward open chamber (49) for heating or cooling. This drives a flywheel (20) in one or the other direction via the piston of the working cylinder. Conversely heating or cooling is provided when the flywheel is driven.
