A wheel (3) rotates about a vertical axis (2) and is driven by rollers (7) mounted at the lower ends of vertical guides (5). The rollers run on a helical track (1) and so impart rotation to the wheel (3). As each roller approaches the step between the beginning and end of the helical track it is raised over the step by a cable passing over a pulley mounted on the wheel. The pulley is rotated by an arm (14), which engages a curved ramp (15). The wheel is thus maintained in perpetual motion.
