The stringed instrument, e.g. a guitar, cello or mandalin, has the neck (2) secured to the body (1) of the instrument, which acts as the soundbox, via a hinge (8). This allows the neck to be folded downwards to fit into a cavity formed along the base of the body, preventing damage to the neck during transport. When the neck is in the stowed position the strings (4) are maintained at a tension sufficient to prevent them from moving relative to the fret, by levers (11) pivoted to a block (12) mounted on the front of the body, each lever securing the end of a respective string.
