The level of CO2 in a fish holding tank is controlled by adding a measured quantity of an alkaline soln to neutralise at least part of the CO2. The method prevents CO2 buid up which causes nephro-calcinosis and death of fish in holding tanks in intensive fish rearing installations. It is also useful for treating spring water having a high CO2 content, which is to be used in a fish farm. The alkali is pref a soln of lime. In one embodiment, a 0.1% lime soln is pumped around a ring main pipe, connected via a metering valve to each holding tank.
