A novel extinguishing powder contains a vegetal prod. which is pref. in the organic state, partic. one of marine origin. Partic. pref. is an alga, esp. a calco-magnesian alga, pref. originating from Lithothamnium Calcareum and/or Maerl calco-magnesian algae, having an extremely porous structure which exerts a thermo-regulating action by heat absorption. The powder can be used, opt. complexed with other materials, for insulating, fireproofing, fire extinguishing or absorbing combustible liquids, opt. using a fire-extinguisher, in the compressed and/or granulated state. It does not have the drawbacks of inorganic extinguishers and combines good props. of hardness, density, stacking, dielectric and flow.
