A plug-in electrical connector has male and female(20) contact housings locked together by a locking plate (30) which has hooked spring legs (33) snap-engaging in recesses in one housing and a spigot (37) pressed from the plate body and engaging in a hole (28) in an open pocket (24) formed on the other housing surface. To allow the other housing to engage the plate and male connector housing a plate-like slide (50) is engaged in the pocket (24) so that when the latter is slid onto the plate (30), two legs (59) of the slide depress the spigot to prevent it fouling the pocket. As the female connector housing fully engages on the male connector housing, pressure on the slide drives this fully into the pocket, releasing the spigot which engages into the pocket hole to secure the connector housings.
