The drive unit for a moped has a pedal-operated crankshaft between the motor and the driving wheel and a lightweight gear unit. An automatically switched friction clutch and a switched rotation blocking device are engaged and disengaged in opposition. - The friction clutch is operated in dependence either on the travel speed of the moped, or on the rate of rotation of the motor. It comprises a flywheel coupling with the pedals acting as the flyweight.
