In the electrowinning of metals from aq. soln. of their sulphates and opt. chlorides in a cell provided with a cation exchange membrane, the metal salt soln. is passed through the cathode compartment and a conc. magnesium and/or sodium and/or potassium chloride soln. is passed through the anode compartment. The method is esp. useful for metal (esp. Cu and/or Zn) recovery, with simultaneous recovery of chlorine and Mg, Na and/or K sulphates, from sulphate solns. obtd. by leaching sulphatising roasted sulphide ores, oxidative sulphuric acid pressure leaching of sulphidicores or pyrometallurgical intermediate products, or sulphuric acid leaching of oxidic ores or pyrometallurgical intermediate products, and sulphate/chloride solns. obtd. by leaching chloridising roasted pyrites cinders.
