The method of treating the soil in which plants (103) are already growing, so as to improve their growth, uses an implement drawn behind a tractor, with two blades (108,109) one above the other. These are pulled through the earth below the level of the roots, so as to break up a layer (102) below that level (106) into small fragments. At the same time, the blades lift the upper layer so that vertical cracks are formed across. The effect is to aerate and loosen the soil to improve growth. The action can be improved by a blade which precedes the double blade so as to form a starting cut and begin the lifting action. The double blades can be rotated or oscillated by a suitable drive on the framework to which the tools are attached. Auxiliary attachments can be added, including a fertiliser distributor which discharges behind the double blades.
