In course of a standard tensile test when a preselected value of change of dimension in longitudinal direction which is characteristic of the material of a reference specimen, is reached during the measuring process, the corresponding changes of dimension in the lateral direction are calculated for preselected anisotropy values (r values). Thereafter, an r-value is selected from the preselected r-values which is closest to the one corresp. to the lateral dimension change measured for a test specimen subjected to the preselected longitudinal dimensional change. The appts. comprises comparator and switching units which are connected to signal transmitters converting changes of dimension in longitudinal, lateral directions respectively into electric signals.
