Opto-plethysmographic sensors are used for monitoring the pulse rate or the blood circulation. Prior types of sensors operating with reflected light from tissues are relatively inefficient, resulting in undesirable thermal effects, or require careful adjustment. The new sensor overcomes these drawbacks by intermingling light transmitting and receiving optic fibres bundles. The mixed optic fibre bundles consist of the transmitter fibres (S) and the slightly receding receiver fibres (E). This arrangement avoids direct pick up of light from the transmitter fibres yet results in very efficient light transmission.
