The number of counters operate on the Coulter principle with a single discontinuously or continuously adjustable lower threshold value. The total number of all suspended blood cells is initially counted, by using a threshold value corresponding to the smallest thrombocytes, with all blood cells except the thrombocytes then counted, by using a threshold value corresponding to that just above the largest possible thrombocytes. The number of thrombocytes per unit vol. is obtained from the difference of these two counts, after compensating for the different amounts of the fluid suspension corresp. to the two threshold values.
