The guide is for a piston rod through a cylinder end wall and comprises a lip seal fitting in a recess in the wall and bearing against the rod. A supporting sleeve (24) extending to the outside of the wall is formed on the seal (22) and is of elastomer material, fitting over the outside of a bush (26) in which the rod (14) works. A scraper ring (30) of hard and typically spring material forms an axial stop for sleeve and bush, it is clamped in an annular groove (18) in the cylinder end wall (10), typically by a cover plate.
