Trapping of sulphur content of burning fuels - by addn. of powdered lime or calcined dolomite

In a process for trapping of the sulphur content of fuels during their combustion, finely-divided S-absorbing substances, e.g. quicklime or calcined dolomite, are added. With coal as fuel, the additive and fuel may be ground together before burning. With oil as fuel, the additive may be mixed with the combustion air. The combusted gases do not contain SO2. The additive contg. combined S may be removed from the solids remaining after combustion e.g. by sieving. Used in the mfr. of cement, and in other processes where the fuel contains S, but where the prod. is required to be S-free, and also in combustion of S-contg. fuels, to avoid SO2 in the off-gas. The S-contg. prod. of the additive may then be left in the ash.
