The explosion is arranged so its speed decreases in the direction of propagation, and pref. in a stepwise manner. The decrease in detonation speed is pref. achieved by reducing the density of the explosive in the direction of propagation, esp. using a stepwise decrease. A weld of very high quality is achieved for tubes with thick walls, so no leakage occurs in the heat exchanger, but excessive distortion of the tube during welding is avoided.
