A device for homogenising temperatures in the circumferential sense at the surface of a cylindrical shell subjected to a circumferential temp. gradient comprises means fixed on one of the faces of the shell to transfer heat from a hot zone of the shell to a colder zone of the shell situated on the same circumference. The means of transferring heat are pref. constituted by hollow rings filled with liq. The rings are composed of a succession of segments inclined w.r.t. the horizontal. Means of fixing the rings onto one of the faces of the shell, means of ensuring thermal contact between each ring and the shell and expansion vessels at the highest points of the inclined segments, are provided.. The device eliminates the circumferential thermal gradients which arise when a cylindrical element, e.g. a pump casing, passes through a wall, e.g. the covering slab of a nuclear reactor, and an annular space results between the cylindrical element and the wall. If there is a difference in temp. between the two faces of the wall, convection currents appear in the fluid filling the annular space. These convection currents result in a circumferential distribution of rising or falling currents, which can be prejudicial to the good mechanical quality of the cylinder.
