A spiral staircase includes a vertical shaft (5) onto which steps (6a) are slipped one above the other. The steps are separated by spacers (7) which make up the central stem of the staircase with the shaft (5). Each spacer consists of two bodies (11,12) which can have a variable combined axial height. One body (12) has a recess (17) and the other body (11) a co-operating projection (13) between which a shim (18) is placed to achieve the desired height.
