Use of a mixture of isomers of caryophyllene alcohol or dihydro caryophyllene alcohol in augmenting or enhancing the aroma or taste of smoking tobacco, smoking tobacco articles and/or smoking tobacco flavors

Described is the use of a mixture of isomers of caryophyllene alcohol or dihydro caryophyllene alcohol including 10,10-dimethyl-2,6- dimethylene bicyclo(7.2.0)undecan-5-ol in augmenting or enhancing the aroma or taste of smoking tobacco, smoking tobacco articles and smoking tobacco flavors. The mixture of isomers of caryophyllene alcohol and dihydro caryophyllene alcohol are prepared by isomerizing caryophyllene oxide or dihydro caryophyllene oxide using an aluminum isopropylate catalyst and a toluene solvent at temperatures in the range of from about 100° C. up to about 150° C.
