Silaging additives for fodder plants - contg. alkali nitrites, cpds. releasing aldehydes under silaging conditions, and benzoic acid

Silaging additives for fodder plants contain (a) 0.75-1 pbw of =1 alkali salts of nitrous acid; (b) 0.3-0.8 pbw of a cpd. which releases a 1-6C aliphatic aldehyde during the acidification process of fodder plants (pref. hexamethylenetetramine or paraformaldehyde); (c) benzoic acid (salt) (pref. sodium benzoate) in an amt. of 0.5-1.5 pbw (w.r.t. 1 pbw a+b) and opt. (d) usual carrier. The additives are pref. used in an amt. of 0.1-0.5 wt. % w.R.T. the green fodder. The additives are easy to use esp. for moist and protein-rich green fodder. The benzoic acid (salt) is not degraded during silaging, and remains as a preservative in the silage.
