An aqueous alkaline hot stripper composition having increased effectiveness and bath life when used at elevated temperatures to remove siccative coatings from substrates coated therewith contains one or more alkaline compounds and a synergistic combination of at least two of the following three activator materials, namely (i) tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, (ii) an ethoxylated furfuryl alcohol and (iii) an ethoxylated tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol. This hot stripper composition also preferably contains a sequestering agent and/or a composition-stabilizing compound and/or a surfactant.
