Removal of heavy metals from liqs. is effected by contact with a modified charcoal having a specific surface of at least 100 square m/g and contg. at least 5 wt.% of surface O-contg. gps., esp. carboxylic and/or sulphonic acid gps.. The modified charcoal pref. contains at least 10 wt.% of surface COOH and/or SO3H gps. and is prepd. by the process of NL 8006453 starting from an active charcoal or carbon black with a specific surface of at least 400 square m/g. The process can be applied to potable water or to H2SO4 or H2SO4-contg. process streams. The modified charcoals have a higher adsorptive capacity for heavy metals than conventional activated charcoal.
