A pneumatic fender of laminated, cord reinforced, rubberised sheet material with a cylindrical contour and roughly spherical ends in one of which there is an air valve, is produced on a rotary former. The main body of an unvulcanised rubber fender is built up as a cylinder on an assembly drum with a closed end face, against which a flat piece of the rubberised material is held and bonded to the edge of the cylindrical layers. The open end of the cylindrical body id folded back towards the first end cover and a number of second end covers are held in posn. and bonded to the various cylindrical layers in their peripheral zones, so that an actual unvulcanised fender with one half folded inside the other is formed on the drum. There is a valve in the second end cover and when compressed air is blown in, the reversal of the cylinder forces the fender off the drum, and it is vulcanised whilst inflated. Eliminates the complicated operations necessary when paper formers are used and have to be removed after vulcanising.
