The slicing machine for bread, meat, cheese etc. is fitted with a safety device preventing its use when the detachable slide - on which the food is placed - is not in position. The machine has a circular blade (13) driven by an electric motor started by a key switch built into the housing of the machine. Into the electric circuit controlling the operation of the electric motor a terminal switch assembly is fitted with a push-button (28) protruding above the surface of the workplate (21). The other end of the push-button (28) rests against leaf-spring contacts (37,38). As long as food slide (22) is not in place, push-button (28) is in its upper position and the points of leaf-contacts (37,38) are open preventing the operation of the electric motor.
