The ventilating system for a factory or hall includes a roof mounted ventilating structure permitting adequate discharge of smoke and flames in the event of a fire. Projecting upwards from an opening (2) in the roof, are the sides (5',5) of a shaft, which slope outwards at a small angle to the vertical, supported by cross members (3). Above them is a V shaped cover (6) between two sides (10) which slope outwards. Around the junction of the shaft with the roof, is a curved deflection strip (16). This has a vertical edge which overlaps the sides of the shaft followed by a rounded section (17) forming a quarter of a circle, then an extension (19) curves backwards to terminate in a flat horizontal end (20). The curved part is suspended downwards below the level of the opening. The two sides of the cover carry control flaps (12) and deflectors (14).
