The compensation circuit is provided to avoid reactive power surges during switching of capacitors on a mains supply. The reactive power compensator stage (B) consists of a fixed capacitor (C) and an inductance (L) that is variable over a thyristor (T). The trigger point of the thyristor is selected for a specific reactive power valve in relation to the mains switching (S). An auxiliary voltage source (H) is coupled over an auxiliary impedance (ZH) to allow oscillation at a frequency tuned to that of the mains. By tuning the compensator to the mains allows suppression of any reactive power surge.
