Skew rolling mill for solid or hollow workpieces - where each of three conical work rolls is located in housing which can pivot towards or away from rolling axis to vary roll gap (J5 8.6.82)
In a roll stand is an axial tube (I) through which the workpiece travels. Tube (I) is surrounded by a driven tube (II) on which a sun wheel is fixed. Tube (II) is surrounded by a rotor, which is driven by an independent drive shaft. In the rotor are three shafts (a), each carrying a spur gear and locate 120 deg. apart. In the spaces between the three gears are three planetary wheels meshing with the sun wheel and spur gears to rotate the three shafts (a). Each shaft (a) uses a pair of bevel gears to rotate a drive shaft (b) carrying a conical work roll. Each drive shaft (b) is located in a housing which is mounted on a pivot shaft so the three work rolls can be moved towards or away from the rolling axis to vary the roll gap. The roll gap can be varied by devices located outside of the housings contg. the roll drive shafts (b).
