Catalyst composition, containing silver, phosphorus and oxygen or silver, molybdenum and oxygen, as well as, if molybdenum is present, optionally one or more promoter elements such as arsenic, antimony, bismuth and phosphorus, the silver:phosphorus or silver:molybdenum atomic ratio being in the range of from 0.25:1 to approximately 10:1, and the promoter: molybdenum atomic ratio being in the range from 0.005:1 to 0.5:1.
